Debunking Common Eye Myths
With so much information online, it can be difficult to know who or what to believe. We’re here to help you debunk some of the common eye myths you will find. As health care professionals, it’s our job to give you the correct information, in a way that’s easy to understand and empowers you to make confident decisions.
1. Myth! Wearing glasses makes your sight worse. Some eye conditions will naturally progress over time, but it is a common misconception that your glasses are the cause of this deterioration. As we wear our glasses, we naturally become used to seeing more clearly. Therefore, if we cannot wear them for one reason or another, it is easy to see why some people think their sight has become worse. Imagine you are driving with your full beams on and then you have to switch to dipped lights. Your sight becomes reduced, however, your dip bulbs haven’t become dimmer.
2. Myth! All reading glasses are the same. Standard reading glasses have their purpose and are a ‘no frills’ type of experience. However, for those who need reading glasses for work etc, it can be annoying when your world is blurry every time you look up from your computer screen. The good news is there are lenses that allow your world to stay in focus, even when glancing between different jobs. Speak to one of our opticians about ZEISS Office Lenses, try them on and see the difference.
3. Myth! You should only get an eye test when your vision becomes blurry. There are many people with perfectly healthy eyes who do not get regular eye check-ups. However, some symptoms you may be experiencing could be linked to your eyes. For example, headaches are one of the most common signs of eye strain. Therefore, even if you think your sight is perfect, you should have regular check-ups to check your eye health and discuss any symptoms that may be related to your eye health.
4. Myth! Using a computer will cause permanent eye damage. Blue rays from your computer screen can cause eye strain and dry eye. However, there is no evidence to suggest your computer screen will cause permanent eye damage. With this being said, symptoms caused by eye strain and dry eye are not comfortable and there are things you can do to keep your eyes comfortable. Zeiss Office lenses are a great start to ensure a comfortable work environment, allowing for sharp vision and relaxed eyes.
5. Myth! “I can only visit my optician when i’m due an eye examination”.
